Mullayangiri peak set at an altitude of 6,330 feet is the highest peak in Karnataka and among the ranges of Himalayas and Nilgiris. It is an easy trek with low steep ascents where the trail passes through serpentine forest where you see the birds chirping in the cold breeze.
Mullayanagiri is also known to be called the paradise of Karnataka as it offers cold winds, white dense clouds and breeze which makes it dazzling. When you reach the peak of Mullayanagiri the view it provides is blissful and you will be awe struck by watching it from your naked eyes. Also don’t miss to watch the cave just below the peak and Nandi sculpture incarnated on it.
Mullayanagiri is about 15 kms ahead of Chikmagalur and about 275 kms away from Banglore in the western ghats of Chikmagalur Taluk.
You see the wide range of western ghats from the Shiva temple. It is said that saint Mulappa Swamy meditated there in the caves which makes it although more spiritual. And not only this you see the enchanting sunrise on the top of the peak hills. The trail includes steep inclinations, stupendous cliffs, dense green forests and a peaceful homestay in the village. And on the way back you can cross through the tiger reserves forest which is towards Kemmangundi to Hebba falls.
Mullayanagiri trek route:
Mullayanagiri is the most famous destination in Karnataka and it’s easy to do as well. It covers a distance of 3-4 kms which can be crossed in 3 hours easily. However if you want to trek and have more challenges than you can trek for 10 kms by venturing further into Baba Budangiri hills where you can also see Manikyadhara falls. The starting point is Sarpadhari. If you are going from Bangalore you can take an overnight KSRTC bus from Bangalore to Chikmagalur. Or you can choose to drive from Bangalore to Hassan then to Belur and then finally to Chikmagalur.
Itinerary:
Day 00- Pickup from Bangalore to start your journey to Mullayanagiri trek. You can have an overnight journey which will make it exciting for you to make up to the Western ghats.
Day 01- Bangalore to Chiklmagalur and then after reaching Chiklamagur you have to trek Sarpadhari to Mullayanagri. Sarpadhari is also known as the serpentine path as in kannada. You will climb to an inclination of 60 degrees stretch where initially you will find the trail steep and it will overcome all your fears of height. And afterwards the inclination increases when the temple flag gets visible to you. And on the way you will come across splendid views of the green western ghats and the astonishing natural beauty as you see the caves below the Shiva temple. You will see the peace tree too on the way and you can spend some time sitting under the tree and cherishing the green meadows all around. After exploring Mullayanagiri peak you have to reach homestay which is 6 kms away. You will get to camp overnight under the gazing stars and in the middle of deep forests.
Day 02- Trek towards Baba Budangiri hills which is known to be sacred for hindu and muslims. To reach Baba Budangiri you have to follow a moderate ascent. You start walking between the ridge hills covered with lush green meadows. Then you return back to Bangalore with lots of beautiful memories which will always stay in your heart forever.
Best time to visit:
The ideal time to visit Mullayanagiri trek would be from September to April. The winter months are best to go as the temperature lies between 14 to 32 degrees. However if you wish to see the western ghats in its more panoramic way then monsoon season that is from June to September is the best to go as you see the ultimate rich greenery around in the midst of fog in the air.
